Nikolaev History

Nikolaev, Ukraine: the City of Brides and the city of shipbuilders. This wonderful city is known best for these two things, and if you look at its history and how it has flourished today, you will understand why.
  • City of Brides
During its early years, men were greater in number compared to women in the population of Nikolaev. To even worsen the odds, many men ran away from the town because of the tiresome and harsh conditions brought about by working at a shipyard. To keep bachelors from fleeing, the founder of the town, Grigory Potemkin, gave the men an opportunity to find a bride and start a family. Men and women from different towns brought by Potemkin would stand in lines across each other, and here, men would meet their brides. They’d then go straight to a church to be wedded. This ceremony was then known as “Potemkin’s Marriages”, and became the source of the city’s title, “The City of Brides”.
